David Courtney David Courtney has seen tragedy and triumph up close and personal, during his years as a pilot in Ireland’s helicopter rescue services. This gripping memoir, from a rescue pilot with some 300 team missions under his belt, vividly illustrates how extraordinary such a life can be. It recounts hair-raising missions that often took place at night, sometimes trying to hover and winch a man onto a heaving deck in pitch darkness during intense gale force winds. This is an authentic, modest and engrossing account of a life lived in a difficult profession – highlighting the marvellous co-operation between the various rescue services of our coasts and mountains, both professional and voluntary. A fascinating story of real life heroes doing their daily business of protecting the people who stand in harm’s way.
