These dogs can cover huge areas efficiently and are especially effective where human sight is limited. Airscenting SAR dogs , or non-scent discriminating SAR dogs can work where other searchers have been or where other people have passed through. They do not require a scent article. They are trained to detect the presence of any human scent in the area

.We all shed dead skin cells , tiny particles known as rafts. These rafts are shed at a rate of 40,000 per minute. Each one of these carries bacteria and vapour, making up the individual scent of the person. These are carried by air and wind currents and this is what the dog is trained to detect. It can take anything from two years up to qualify as Search Dog Team. These dogs are trained to a very high standardand once qualified they are reassessed every three years. The Gardai or the Search and Rescue team coordinating the search can request the assisstance of a SARDA dog team.
